What each character count means

A single character total can hide important differences. Use the metric that matches the destination rule, then verify the final form or app when its limit is strict.

Visible characters include whitespace

The main total uses browser grapheme segmentation when available and includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. It is intended to approximate the symbols a person sees.

No whitespace removes spaces, tabs, and line breaks

This total removes Unicode whitespace before counting visible graphemes. It does not mean letters only: punctuation, numbers, symbols, and emoji remain.

UTF-16 units match JavaScript string length

Browsers represent JavaScript strings with UTF-16 units. Some emoji and non-BMP characters use two or more units even when they appear as one visible symbol.

UTF-8 bytes measure encoded size

Bytes describe the UTF-8 encoded length, not the number of visible symbols. Use this evidence for technical storage or transfer checks, not as a universal character limit.
